DESCRIPTION
The IBM SolutionPac Personal Publishing System is the IBM
Personal System/2 Model 30 based system for the cross
industry requirement for in-house compound document creation
and printing. The IBM Personal Pageprinter, the IBM
Personal Pageprinter Adapter, the IBM Personal Pageprinter
Adapter Program, and associated vendor software will be
available as components in System SolutionPacs and Option
SolutionPacs. Component parts will also be available
separately, with the exception of Microsoft Windows and
Aldus Pagemaker which will only be available through IBM as
part of the SolutionPacs.
The IBM Personal Pageprinter is a compact, table top, page
printer capable of printing up to 6 pages per minute
utilizing a laser/ electrophotographic (EP) process.It has a
new video interface which is designed to allow the printer
to be coupled with an appropriate IBM Personal Computer with
a large portion of what is normally regarded as printer
function residing in the IBM Personal Pageprinter Adapter.
The IBM Personal Pageprinter Adapter contains a M68000
coprocessor used to format a page to be printed and used to
control the printer. It may be installed in an IBM Personal
Computer XT 286, Personal Computer AT Models 099, 239, 319,
339, or IBM Personal System/2 Model 30.
The IBM Personal Pageprinter Adapter Program contains the
software, loadable to the IBM Personal Pageprinter Adapter,
that performs the PostScript interpretation, page layout and
printing.
DOS 3.3 is included in the System SolutionPac.
The vendor page layout (PageMaker from Aldus Corporation)
and environment manager (Microsoft Windows, which includes
Microsoft Windows Write and Microsoft Windows Paint)
software are also included in the System and Option
SolutionPacs.
The IBM SolutionPac Personal Publishing System is designed
to provide users of the IBM Personal Computer with a
complete entry-level personal publishing system, or Desktop
Publishing capability. A personal publishing system is a
system that allows a single user to create documents that
can include graphics, image and text and to print them at
high quality, in addition to performing other
general-purpose personal computing tasks.
The IBM SolutionPac Personal Publishing System will be
packaged for customers as a total solution for the desktop
publishing application. IBM Dealers may order the
SolutionPac using a single order number and will receive all
of the required hardware and software to begin desktop
publishing.
The IBM SolutionPac Personal Publishing System "total
package" and "ease of use" characteristics will minimize the
requirement for structured pre-installation support
programs.
During the packaging process (for the System SolutionPac),
the IBM Personal Pageprinter Adapter will be installed in
the system unit and the system hard file will be pre-loaded
with all of the application software. This will include DOS
3.3, Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Windows Write, Microsoft
Windows Paint, PageMaker from Aldus Corporation and the IBM
Personal Pageprinter Adapter Program, including Adobe
PostScript.
Related documentation and diskettes for all software
included in the SolutionPac will be shipped with the product
to provide back-up support for the user.
The one time start up diskette shipped with the product will
allow the user to begin desktop publishing after loading the
diskette in the system.
Introduction to PageMaker
SolutionPac users may learn how to use PageMaker by using a
tutorial included in the package which describes the basic
functions of PageMaker.
Document Creation
The IBM SolutionPac Personal Publishing System provides a
complete set of functions for the creation and editing of
text, graphics and pictures, and their layout into document
pages.
Document Types
Documents can be produced locally without involving
departmental or corporate publishing operations, thus making
high quality document production available to a wide range
of users.
The following are representative types of documents produced
with the aid of the IBM SolutionPac Personal Publishing
System.
o Newsletters
o Technical Data Sheets
o Brochures
o Manuals
o Overhead Presentations
o Letters
o Newspapers
o Flow charts
o Product announcements
o Proposals
o Catalogs
o Advertisements
o Memos
o Reports
o Organization charts
o Business forms
Integration
The IBM SolutionPac Personal Publishing System provides two
kinds of integration:
o Data integration
The ability to combine into a single document the output
of widely-used Personal Computer-based text, graphics and
image applications
o Application integration
The ability of the user to move between the various
stages of document production smoothly, with a
consistent, easily understood interface being presented.
o Printer resolution
The IBM Personal Pageprinter is a 300 dots per inch (dpi)
laser printer.
o Text quality
The quality and flexibility of the text produced is a key
element of the IBM SolutionPac Personal Publishing
System. Text quality includes:
- Support of a wide range of fonts used by the printing
and publishing industry.
- The ability to set text orientation and choose point
size
- Standard Printing industry level of control over the
typesetting process, including:
-- Variable word spacing
-- Variable letter spacing
-- Kerning
-- Mixing of different typefaces/fonts
USABILITY AND PERFORMANCE
The IBM SolutionPac Personal Publishing System places
considerable emphasis on the different aspects of usability.
Ease of installation: The user is able to start operating
the system after a simple installation procedure.
Ease of learning: The user is able to gain productive use
from the system quickly.
Ease of use Application: The system is simple to use and
viewed by the user as comprising a system. The following
state-of-the-art techniques are employed:
o Support of a pointing device -- IBM Personal System/2
Mouse
o Use of icons and pull-down menus to simplify user choices
o Consistent interface presented by the key applications
o Multiple concurrent applications.
This capability allows users to create different document
elements as required and in context.
The IBM SolutionPac Personal Publishing System places
considerable emphasis on the different aspects of
performance:
WYSIWYG: The IBM SolutionPac Personal Publishing System
provides an interactive composition environment in which
document pages are presented on the screen as closely as
possible to their printed appearance (What You See Is What
You Get) and where user layout choices are immediately
reflected in changes to the screen.
Hardware
System Unit: The system unit has sufficient processing
speed to support the highly interactive personal publishing
applications. The design of the system unit package has
good "desk-top" attributes i.e., a small footprint. The
system unit includes sufficient main memory to accommodate
the key personal publishing applications, and direct access
storage for storing:
o Programs
o User text and graphics files
o Screen fonts
o Printer fonts
o Other printer control files
o Formatted documents
Input devices: In addition to a keyboard suitable for text
entry and editing and other personal productivity
applications, an IBM Personal System/2 Mouse is provided,
and is required for page composition applications (PageMaker
from Aldus Corporation).
Display adapter and monitor: The all points addressable
(APA) display terminals are well suited for personal
publishing tasks. Legibility of text during interactive
page composition is an important quality criterion. The
displays can be used for personal publishing applications,
and when the IBM Personal System/2 Color Display is chosen,
color is supported for other personal productivity
applications.
Printing sub-system: The printer and its controller are key
elements in the personal publishing system.
Highlights include:
o APA printing at a resolution of 300 dpi.
o Printing of mixed text/graphics documents via an
implementation of industry-standard page description
language (Adobe PostScript).
o Ability to carry out standard workstation (ASCII)
printing functions and support existing Personal Computer
applications in addition to its use as a PostScript
printer. Emulation of the Proprinter XL is a standard
feature.
The Proprinter XL extended ASCII datastream represents
IBM's standard for mixed text and graphics.
The throughput achieved by personal publishing printers
can be significantly less than their rated speeds because
of bottlenecks such as the time taken to:
1. Transfer image data to the printer controller:
This time has been reduced by providing a fast link
between the Personal Computer and the printer
controller
2. Convert vector character definitions to their raster
representation:
This time has been reduced by providing the ability to
save, and subsequently load, the contents of the font
cache commonly used by the printer.
o Ability to overlap printing with interactive processing
o Automatic feeding of cut stationery of sizes ranging up
to US Legal
o Footprint and acoustical properties suitable for office
use
IBM SOLUTIONPAC PERSONAL PUBLISHING OPTION
This printing sub-system consists of hardware and software
elements and is designed to allow Personal Computer XT 286,
Personal Computer AT Models 99, 239, 319, 339, or IBM
Personal System/2 Model 30, systems units to be upgraded to
support personal publishing applications.
Hardware
IBM Personal Pageprinter (4216-020): The IBM Personal

IBM Personal Pageprinter Adapter:
o Printer Cable
A two-meter cable for attaching the IBM Personal
Pageprinter
o Personal Pageprinter Adapter
This option is a card assembly that plugs into the IBM
Personal Computer XT 286, IBM Personal Computer AT Models
99, 219, 319, 339 or IBM Personal System/2 Model 30
system units.
This option is essentially an M68000 coprocessor card for
the Personal Computer, with laser printer support which
contains:
- A 10 MHz M68000 processor
- 2Mb bytes of RAM
- 512Kb bytes of program memory (loadable RAM)
- 16Kb bytes of EPROM (boot code and diagnostics)
Basic Assurance Tests (BATs): These are diagnostics
run at power-on time to verify that the option is
functioning correctly.
Initial Program Load (IPL): This is the code that
controls initialization and download of further code
into program memory. When download is complete, the
IPL code relinquishes control to the downloaded code.
In addition, this option has the following features
- An alternate write path to the RAM that provides
hardware assist for such functions as data ORing,
word rotate and automatic clearing.
- FIFO and serializer logic to convert the image in RAM
to a video bitstream for printing on the IBM Personal
Pageprinter.
- An interface port between the M68000 and the Personal
Computer.
The PC/68000 interface consists of a modified Parallel
Printer adapter design. This is the only
communication that the Personal Computer has with the
68000; no Personal Computer memory space is occupied.
The interface will emulate the normal Personal
Computer printer port (e.g., when an ASCII emulator
is running) and can be driven by normal BIOS, or can
be switched into an alternate mode that can transfer
data much faster, and bi-directionally, using a packet
protocol.
- Mechanically, an assembly that occupies one Personal
Computer XT form factor (long) slot. IBM Personal
Pageprinter connects via a 2m cable and a 15-way
D-connector on the backplate.

Software
1. IBM Pageprinter Adapter Program including Adobe
PostScript: Supports the full PostScript programming
language defined in the PostScript Language Reference Manual
by Adobe Systems Incorporated (Published by Addison-Wesley).
Software for the printer sub-system falls into two
categories:
1. Software that runs in the IBM Personal Pageprinter
Adapter and is downloaded from the Personal Computer
2. Software that runs in the Personal Computer
Software downloaded (into the IBM Personal Pageprinter
Adapter): The IBM Personal Pageprinter Adapter Program
includes a PostScript Interpreter that has a principal
function of processing PostScript programs sent from the
Personal Computer and sending the raster data generated to
the IBM Personal Pageprinter. In addition, the PostScript
Interpreter has the following functions developed
specifically for the environment created by the combination
of the IBM Personal Computer and the IBM Personal
Pageprinter:
o ASCII Emulation.
An emulator built into the PostScript Interpreter allows
the IBM Personal Pageprinter to appear to a Personal
Computer application as an IBM Proprinter XL. Thus the
IBM Personal Pageprinter can be used as a general-purpose
workstation ASCII printer as well as a PostScript
printer.
The functions of the Proprinter XL are emulated,
including set-up functions, bit-image graphics and
down-loadable fonts. The various text modes are emulated
using the Adobe Courier typeface, supplemented by fonts
containing the remaining graphics of code page 437 (box
drawing characters etc.)
o When the IBM Personal Pageprinter Adapter is used to
emulate a standard Personal Computer parallel printer
adapter, the PostScript Interpreter accepts data
transferred byte-by-byte from the Personal Computer and
passes it to the Proprinter XL emulator. When the IBM
Personal Pageprinter Adapter is used in enhanced mode,
the PostScript Interpreter supports high-speed,
bi-directional transfers of data packets. In enhanced
mode, the Personal Computer can evoke either the
PostScript Interpreter or the Proprinter XL emulator
functions of the PostScript Interpreter.
o The PostScript Interpreter supports the downloading from
the Personal Computer, and uploading to the Personal
Computer of font caches. The font cache is a repository
for text characters in raster form, created dynamically
from general-purpose vector forms. By using raster
representations from the cache whenever they exist, the
performance of the interpreter is improved. The contents
of the cache varies with the "document profile" i.e.,
the set of typeface and point sizes used. The ability to
save and later restore the cache can improve performance
by reducing still further the number of vector symbols
that need to be rastered. This applies particularly to
the initial pages produced that correspond to a
particular "profile".
Personal Computer Software: Personal Computer software
supporting the printing subsystem consists of the following
programming and data:
o Packet Driver: The packet driver is a device handler
routine, called by software interrupt, that controls
"enhanced mode" transfers of data packets to and from
the PostScript Interpreter. It is installed as resident
DOS extension during system setup.
o Enhanced Printer Driver: The enhanced printer driver is
a DOS device driver supporting packet-mode transfers to
the PostScript Interpreter in a Microsoft Windows
environment. It is invoked via DOS from the Windows
communications driver and interfaces to the packet
driver.
o Load Utility: The load utility reads the file containing
the PostScript Interpreter and downloads it to the IBM
Personal Pageprinter Adapter.
o Print Profile Loader: The print profile loader controls
the printing environment by sending data files and
default values to the PostScript Interpreter.
The data and default values are controlled by profiles.
Profiles are standard ASCII files and can be created and
edited using normal Personal Computer editors. The
following information is contained in a profile.
- The name of the font cache to be downloaded
- A list of names of PostScript-compatible fonts to be
downloaded (in addition to the 13 base typefaces
integrated with the PostScript Interpreter)
- A set of values of parameters to be used by default by
the PostScript Interpreter for every job:
-- Page size
-- Time-outs
-- Paper tray number
-- Proprinter XL defaults
o Print Profile Manager: The print profile manager is an
interactive dialog for creating, editing and loading
profiles. It is invoked as a Microsoft Windows
application.
o Print Utility: The print utility sends ASCII or
PostScript files to the PostScript Interpreter via the
packet driver. It is a standalone utility that can be
used either under DOS or under Microsoft Windows.
o Cache Utility: The cache utility retrieves the current
font cache from the PostScript Interpreter and saves it
as a file under a user-specified name.
o Startup program: Establishes the publishing environment
by invoking the Load Utility and Profile Loader and,
optionally, printing a sample page and invoking Microsoft
Windows.
Setup program: Used to install the IBM Personal Pageprinter
Adapter Program product (when installing the printer
subsystem or reinstalling the software shipped with the IBM
SolutionPac Personal Publishing System.)

Compatibility: IBM Personal Pageprinter, IBM Personal
Pageprinter Adapter option and IBM Personal Pageprinter
Adapter Program in combination comprise a printer which can
be used as a PostScript printer or an ASCII printer
emulating the IBM 4202 Proprinter XL.
PostScript Printer
As a PostScript printer and Personal PagePrinter Adapter
combination, it is compatible with other (non-IBM)
PostScript printers in that it supports the full PostScript
programming language defined in the PostScript Language
Reference Manual by Adobe Systems Incorporated (published by
Addison-Wesley). In addition, the IBM adaption-specified
functions are supported.
There are three PostScript interfaces to the printer:
1. Packet Driver
The Packet Driver, called by software interrupt, presents
a BIOS-level interface. This is a new interface,
designed specifically to support high-speed transfers of
data between the Personal Computer and the PostScript
interpreter running in the IBM Personal Pageprinter
Adapter Program.
2. Printer Driver
The Printer Driver is an installable DOS device driver,
that interfaces to the Packet Driver. It is designed to
support PostScript printing, primarily in the Windows or
DOS environment.
3. Standalone Print Utility
This utility allows one or more DOS files to be sent as
PostScript files to the PostScript interpreter via the
Packet Driver. (It also supports ASCII printing)
ASCII Printer
As an ASCII printer, it is compatible at a BIOS level with
any Personal Computer program issuing the ROM BIOS INT 17H
call, and at an adapter level with the Personal Computer
parallel printer adapter set to port 2.
At a data stream and functional level, it is compatible with
the IBM 4202 Proprinter XL with the following observations:
The default font of the 4202 is emulated by the Courier font
with extensions for block graphics characters etc.
Emphasized mode is emulated using Courier Bold. In
addition, a mode can be set which will allow PostScript to
be printed via ROM BIOS INT 17H.
Writing line: The 4202 has a maximum writing line of 13.6
inches. IBM Personal Pageprinter (4216-020) supports a
maximum paper width of 8.5 inches. The 4202 emulator
function of the PostScript Interpreter supports a maximum
writing line of 8.0 inches (like the 4201). The emulator
treats lines longer than current paper width (0.5 inches) in
the same way as a 4201, i.e., by wrapping text onto the
next line and by truncating graphics. In addition, set
margin controls that would set a margin beyond current paper
width (0.5 inches) are ignored.
Text modes: The Proprinters trade off speed against quality
and thus distinguish between draft and NLQ quality. No such
trade off applies to the emulator. Draft and NLQ appear the
same.
APPLICATION SOFTWARE COMPATIBILITY
Information on compatibility with other selected application
programs, IBM and non-IBM, will be provided prior to first
customer shipment.
PageMaker from Aldus Corporation Compatibility
The PageMaker from Aldus Corporation announced for the IBM
Personal Computer runs under Microsoft Windows on a minimum
configuration specified by Microsoft Windows and supports
the importing of data:
PageMaker is a licensed software product that provides the
ability to electronically layout pages that are formatted
for camera ready copy or typesetting.
PageMaker integrates Personal Computer DOS files from a
variety of licensed software products including text files,
such as DisplayWrite, in the Revisable Form Text Document
Content Architecture (RFTDCA), scanned images in a Tag Image
File Format (TIFF), Encapsulated PostScript and a variety of
PC Graphic Programs.
Text, graphic and image DOS files which have been composed
and edited are integrated in a PageMaker document file.
This file is then electronically cut and pasted to include
columns, margins, heading, type sizes, fonts and complete
page layout of the document to be printed. The file is
printed on a laser printer which provides suitable camera
ready copy in many situations or output to PostScript
compatible typesetters.
PageMaker can import the following types of data:
1. Formatted files created with these word processors:
o Microsoft Word
o WordPerfect
o MultiMate
o WordStar 3.3
o XyWrite III
2. ASCII text files and IBM Revisable-Form-Text DCA format
files created by word processors such as:

degrees F)
The IBM Personal Pageprinter is for use with the IBM
SolutionPac Personal Publishing System and Option only.
Compatibility: Memory, printer control function, and fonts
are not resident in the IBM Personal Pageprinter, but reside
in the IBM Personal Pageprinter Adapter and Adapter Program.
Prerequisites: The IBM Personal Pageprinter Adapter is
required to attach the IBM Personal Pageprinter to the IBM
SolutionPac Personal Publishing System.
Limitations: The IBM Personal Pageprinter is capable of
printing up to 6 pages per minute. However, the printer's
performance depends on several factors:
o 6 pages per minute excludes the first page print time of
25 seconds.
o Host system and application (image/graphics content
varies performance)
o Paper size (6 PPM is for letter or A4 size paper)
o The complexity of the page to be printed
The IBM Personal Pageprinter is capable of handling the
following paper types and sizes:
1. Letter Size -- 216 x 279mm (8.5 x 11 in.)
2. Legal Size -- 216 x 356mm (8.5 x 14 in.)
3. Half Letter -- 140 x 216mm (5.5 x 8.5 in.)
4. A4 -- 210 x 297 mm
5. B5 -- 182 x 257 mm
6. A5 -- 148 x 210 mm
7. Envelopes -- Manual
8. Transparencies -- A4 or Letter -- Manual only
9. Xerographic Labels -- Letter or A4 size -- Manual only
Envelopes, labels and transparencies should be tested by the
end user for satisfactory results before purchasing large
quantities.
For satisfactory feeding, envelopes should not be stored nor
manually fed where the humidity exceeds 70% R.H.
Transparencies with white optical sensor stripes coated with
silicon lubricant, and transparencies intended for infrared
copiers are not recommended.
Transparencies should be treated for de-static control.
Maximum envelope stacking -- 25 in upper tray; 5 in lower
tray
All papers placed in the printer should be new, unused and
without packaging damage. To improve feed reliability all
papers should be "fanned" before being placed into the input
tray.
For best performance, xerographic paper should be used in
the printer. Because of its special characteristics,
xerographic paper usually works better than other types of
paper. IBM Multi-System Paper is top quality xerographic
paper.
Plain bond paper of one of the following compositions may
also be used:
o No. 1 sulfite (100% chemical wood pulp)
o 25% cotton content
o 50% cotton content
o Paper made from recycled office paper
100% cotton content paper is not recommended for use in this
printer because poor print quality may result and extended
use may shorten the life of the cleaning unit or fuser
assembly.
The IBM Personal Pageprinter is capable of reliably feeding,
printing, and ejecting xerographic paper with weights of 60
- 90 g/m2 (16 to 24 lbs).Printing on preprinted forms should
be tested by the end user for satisfactory results.
The printer feeds and aligns envelopes whose length, defined
as the dimension parallel to the feed direction, ranges from
a minimum of 187 mm (7.36 in.) to a maximum of 250 mm (9.84
in.), and whose width, defined as the dimension
perpendicular to the feed direction, ranges from a minimum
of 98.4 mm (3.875 in.) to a maximum of 176 mm (6.93 in).
The composition and substance weight of envelopes which are
fed are based on the same standards as for paper.
Reference the IBM Page Printers Paper Reference Booklet (P/N
1686710) for additional information on paper
characteristics.
End User Responsibilities: The IBM Personal Pageprinter is
designated as a end user set-up (CSU) printer when the
printer is ordered separately. The customer will be
responsible for adequate site preparation and physical
set-up of the printer.
Installability: Unpacking, set-up and start-up testing is
designed to allow the end user to make the printer
operational and/or relocate the printer without special
tools, special operator skills, safety exposure, or access
to other than end user access areas.
Problem Determination: The Guide to Operations provides
procedures for problem determination and correction.
Packaging: The Printer, the IBM Personal Pageprinter Guide
to Operations Kit, one set of the required initial supplies
(toner and photoconductor kit), and an inventory checklist
are shipped with the printer. Additionally, a IBM Personal
Pageprinter attachment cable is included with each IBM
